Description

Funds support research and the collection of oral histories of retired longshoremen of the International Longshoremen’s Association Local #1329. One of the members, Arthur S. Soares, a Fox Point Cape Verdean, was the first black President of the Propeller Club of the United States Port of Narragansett Bay, and led a racially and ethnically diverse labor group. The project aims to bring to light untold stories and an untold element of Rhode Island history and culture through a diversity of topics ranging from work gear to worker discrimination.

Project entailed a slide show talk. Oral histories from the International Longshoreman’s Association ILA Local #1329, conducted and transcribed by Sylvia Ann Soares were transformed into dramatic reading excerpts and two books, one of interviews and essay and one of images.
